Don't Believe Everything You've been Told - 3 Common Misconceptions about Acne and Blemishes

By Claudia Maghidman-

We have all struggled with acne at some point in our lives. From the bright red pimple that unexpectedly pops up on a first date to the deep-seated cyst that hurts and scars, we have experienced it all. And we’re here to tell you that you don’t have to let acne win. You can control it and get the beautiful skin you’ve always wanted.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of myths regarding acne, and it can be difficult to distinguish fact from fiction. That’s why we’ve compiled this list of some of the most common myths surrounding acne.

Dirt Causes Acne – You Would Have Clear Skin if You Cleanse More

No, no … absolutely no! Dirt does not cause acne. Acne is actually caused by a certain type of bacteria that grows in your sebaceous glands or oil glands. When you scrub your face too much, you stimulate your pores to produce more oil, which causes bacteria to flourish. While cleansing is necessary, too much of a good thing can actually cause you to break out more.

You Have to Squeeze the Puss Out of Zits

You don’t have to squeeze pimples to get rid of the puss. Your body has the natural ability to remove pockets of puss from your skin, which is exactly what pimples are. Popping and squeezing zits can actually cause the infection to move deeper into your skin, which can lead to further complications, such as infection, pitting and scarring.

Your Beauty Regimen Doesn’t Matter – If you’re Prone to Acne, You Will Have It

A proper beauty regimen can mean all the difference between clear skin and acne-riddled skin. So don’t believe this one! Not only should you follow a faithful skincare routine, you should select non-comedogenic products that are specifically formulated for your skin type.

Cleanse, tone and moisturize your skin once in the morning and once right before bed for the best results. You should also think about getting a facial at least once a week. We also recommend the occasional chemical peel since they eliminate pesky red spots and scars.

If you’re not sure what products to use, we at Health and Skin Center of Miami are excited to help you get into the most beautiful skin of your life.
